Many people find that keeping up with a fitness program or diet is almost impossible when they’re traveling, but a major aspect of getting and staying fit is consistency and sticking to your workout and healthy eating habits. If you break these habits while traveling, it can be difficult to start them up again once you’re home, and you may feel guilty about your indulgences or lack of activity during your trip.
Prioritizing your wellness when you travel can actually help you to enjoy your trip more. When you incorporate your workout routine and standard diet, you’ll likely feel better physically and mentally during your trip. Plus, focusing on wellness can help to fight off illnesses and other issues, so you’re better able to enjoy your vacation, work trip, or other travel occasion.
Pack With Wellness in Mind
Prioritizing your wellness while you travel starts with what you pack, and there are some essentials you should never fly without. To start, always pack a reusable water bottle and some healthy snacks. When you have these items with you, you’ll be less likely to buy plastic water bottles or soda, or to buy unhealthy snacks out of necessity. You’ll start your trip out right and establish good eating habits for your entire time away from home. Plus, when you’re drinking water and eating healthy snacks, you won’t encounter that energy crash later on from the sugar spike you experienced while on the plane.
To support your overall wellness and stay healthy while traveling, pack all of your standard vitamins so that you can support your nutrition during the trip. It’s also a good idea to pack some cold medicines and medicines for minor ailments, like digestive upset.
Prioritize Your Mental Health
It’s also important to take steps to reduce the stress of traveling. Start by doing your packing ahead of time so that you’re not rushing and worried about forgetting something important. Before you leave for the airport, check the airline’s website for any delay notices so that you don’t sit in the airport longer than you have to. Leave for the airport with plenty of extra time to account for unexpected issues like a car accident along the route causing traffic backups, and bring some entertainment with you, like a good book or podcast to pass the time that you do spend waiting.
Your attitude about travel can also affect your mental health. Rather than thinking of the trip as a stressful event, try to see it as being an adventure. Simply having the right attitude toward travel can keep your stress level down and improve your mental health during the journey.
To help control stress, focus on getting exercise, too. Exercising and playing sports can be therapeutic, and can help you to both regulate your emotions and even give your self-esteem a boost, too. Even though exercising might be inconvenient while you’re traveling, you need to make time for this important part of both your physical and your mental health.
Make Time for Exercise
When you book your hotel, think about your exercise needs and consider the facilities that the hotel offers. Free use of a hotel gym can encourage you to work out more, but make sure that the gym offers the type of equipment that you’ll need for a good workout.
If you’re traveling with children, it can be hard to get your exercise in when you’re supervising them in a hotel room. Consider booking your trip at a hotel or resort that offers supervised activities for your kids, like a splash park or supervised kids’ club. While your kids play in a safe environment, you can focus on getting a workout in. Alternatively, get the whole family involved in physical activities like going swimming, so you can all exercise together.
Exercise doesn’t have to mean hitting the gym, either. In fact, there are many ways to maintain your fitness goals when you travel. Get active and take part in local physical tourism activities, like guided hikes and walking tours. Bring along some weights to maximize the effort you exert during these activities.
Try to get involved in local activities, too. Do some research ahead of time to see if there are any races or walks scheduled and sign up for them. These can make for great ways to see some local scenery while still staying active.
Manage Your Schedule
If you’re going on a vacation, it can be tempting to try to pack your schedule full of activities, but resist this urge. Going flat-out every day can exhaust you and leave you at an increased risk of getting sleep. If you don’t get enough sleep, your immune system can’t fully function. Plan your schedule so that you can get at least seven or eight hours of sleep each night and you’ll increase the chances of your body being able to fight off illnesses during the trip.
A trip is only enjoyable if you’re feeling good. By prioritizing your wellness during your travel, you’ll make the experience more enjoyable for you, your family, and anyone else along during the trip.
